Marcus Whitby - John edit 2

UPDATE: Since my original inception of Marcus, I have since revamped him to be a part of the Bungo Stray Dogs fandom. His original Attack on Titan story is still there, it's just not the one I'm using at present. To find it, please follow the link at the end of this section!--Marcus was the first character I had ever created for Attack on Titan.
He's gone through many changes since I made him, stemming from his roots as a simple plot device to move another character's story forward through to having a whole standalone story on his own.
His character has become very dear to my heart and Twitter is the first platform I’ve ever role played with him on. Everything else up till now has strictly been unposted fan fiction I’ve written with him. Now, my original characters in this series have honestly had very little to do with the main canon of the series. This is mostly because I didn’t want to infringe on any events and make it seem like I’m trying to bend canon to fit my characters. No no, I bend my characters to fit canon. So lets get to the information.

Background Information

Marcus Whitby is, at the start of his story, a captain in the military and the leader of a special operations unit tasked with some of the most dangerous missions handed down. He hails from North America but is now a freelance journalist in Yokohama Japan. He was born to parents unknown and raised in an orphanage from the age of three until he was old enough to enlist in the military. While in the orphanage, Marcus became very close with another boy there he only knew as Topper. Once he left for the military, Marcus would not see Topper again until he was in his thirties and finds Topper, whom he then knows to be Thomas Berkley, as a member of the military police that govern his outpost.Marcus has no real memory of his own parents except for a very vague memory of his father telling him to follow his heart.
Because he never knew parents either fostered or birth, he has a real fondness for children in similar circumstances to his own. As such he spends a great deal of his free time visiting the children of the orphanages and, when he can, he helps some of these children find homes with loving families.
While he was in training in the military, Marcus met his long-term partner and eventual husband, Eric Spivey, whom later joined the core Marcus's unit was branched off from.Despite their relationship, Marcus and Eric kept it to themselves for fear of backlash and ridicule from their colleagues. None knew of their relationship until a year after their honourable discharge. There is a scar on the left side of Marus’s face from an accident during his training days. At some point during gear training, another trainee had a mishap with their gun that resulted in their weapon blowing back into Marcus's face. The incident caused a domino effect as Marcus was startled and ended up cracking Eric in the face leaving him with a sizable gash on the bridge of his nose.At some point before Marcus and Eric were married, Marcus came adopted a little girl named Anne O'Brien. Despite having no idea what a "gifted" meant, he brought in his application in between jobs and relied on long distance communication to meet the deadlines for his interviews.Once things cleared, Marcus brought her home the moment he had a little vacation time saved up.Later on when questioned about her gift, Marcus claimed he had no idea she had a special ability as he'd always thought that "gifted" simply meant she was a prodigy of some sort.Marcus would later discover that his daughter did in fact have a special ability called "Queen of the Damned", something the government expressed a keen interest in.After Marcus and Eric married, Mark proposed a move to a new place in the hopes of keeping Anne safe from the government.By the time Anne was old enough to start grade school, Marcus and Eric decided to move to Yokohama Japan for a fresh start.Upon Anne's graduation from highschool, Marcus had become a rather successful freelance journalist while Eric was running an IT company in partner with an old friend from his college days. When the Decay of Angels start their assault against the Armed Detective Agency, Anne is one of a myriad of gifted girls that goes missing. Fearing that the military police and the government are involved in her disappearance after what happened in North America, Marcus turns to an old acquaintance he'd met in the military; Doctor Nikolai Gervasi, now a member of the Port Mafia of Yokohama.Despite their history, Marcus is forced to rely on his intelligence to figure out that the DoA may be the ones responsible for Anne's disappearance because of her special ability. With nowhere left to turn, Marcus decides to approach the Armed Detective Agency for help.... it's just a matter of finding them.--During the time in which Marcus was in the military, he was approached and eventually detained by Nikolai Gervasi, a surgeon and torture specialist tasked with gathering information.During his detainment, Marcus was subjected to a series of gruesome tortures at Nikolai's hands that eventually lead to his breakdown and subsequent reveal of his purpose for being there.Disappointed, Nikolai released him and never revealed his findings. Marcus had no idea at the time that Nikolai suspected him of being a gifted, only learning of such after his daughter Anne went missing.Marcus himself is not a gifted ability user.--Before moving to Yokohama, Marcus once searched for another child to adopt so Anne had a sibling to keep her company while he was working.During his search, Marcus stumbled across a photo of Osamu Dazai and desperately tried to get in touch with all manners of people in Japan to work out an adoption for him.Unfortunately, all trace of Dazai vanished once the Port Mafia had gotten their hands on them and Marcus was forced to halt his search. He still hopes that Dazai was adopted though he fears the worst.Additionally, Marcus also found a photo of Chuuya Nakahara, though all trace of him vanished long before Marcus could inquire about him.

Background Information

Marcus Whitby is, at the start of his story, a Captain within the Scout Regiment. He hails from Trost District but runs a Special Operations squad code named Squad Whitby from the North. He was born to parents unknown and raised in the Trost District orphanage from the age of three until he was old enough to enlist in the cadets. While in the orphanage, Marcus became very close with another boy there he only knew as Topper. Once he left for the cadets, Marcus would not see Topper again until he was in his thirties and finds Topper, whom he then knows to be Thomas Berkley, as a member of the Military Police.Marcus has no real memory of his own parents except for a very vague memory of his father telling him to follow his heart.
Because he never knew parents either fostered or birth, he has a real fondness for children in similar circumstances to his own. As such he spends a great deal of his free time visiting the children of the orphanages and, when he can get permission from the nobles who own the gates, the children in the Underground.
While he was in the cadets, Marcus met his long-term partner and eventual husband, Eric Spivey, whom later joined the Garrison Regiment.Despite pleading from Eric, Marcus joined the Scout Regiment rather than the Garrison. This is often a source of contention between him and Eric that dissipates once Eric sees Marcus at work against a group of titans for the first time. There is a scar on the left side of Marus’s face from an accident during his training in the cadets. At some point during ODM gear training, Marcus collided with Eric leaving him with a sizable gash on his face.Eric sports a similar scar across his nose from the same incident. At some point before Marcus and Eric were married, Marcus came across a little girl outside the walls while on a scouting mission. Despite having no idea how she got there, he brought her to the Trost orphanage where he'd grown up and claimed that her parents had been killed by titans on the field.
Once things had cleared, Marcus ended up adopting her on his own nearly a month after the fact.
Later on when questioned about her after the fall of Wall Maria, he lied and said her family's documentation had been destroyed after the disaster in Shiganshina.
Marcus would later discover that his daughter, Amber Dangidar, was from a small neighbouring nation in the North East and she hailed from the island of Topaz that had been destroyed by Marley for the resources beneath its soil nearly twenty years prior (approximately seventeen years). As she slowly regains her memories, it is revealed she was the last of the Aruviesh people whom worshipped something called the "Sky titan" and was apparently the last remaining member of the Royal Monarchy of Topaz. After Marcus and Eric married, Mark moved up north with Amber to Utopia district to be closer to Eric and provide Amber with some semblance of a normal home life while he was out beyond the walls.By the time Amber was old enough to join the cadets, Marcus had her enlisted in the Northern 104th cadet core despite Eric's misgivings about it, however, because Marcus and Eric lived in separate districts Amber was forced to transfer between the Southern and Northern cores until Marcus officially moved them both up to Utopia.Upon her graduation, Marcus plucked her and a handful of others from the Northen cadet core for his Special Ops squad. At first, Marcus runs the Northern Special Ops squad as a compromise as he had been offered and turned down a number of promotions to Section Commander, claiming that he doesn't need that kind of responsibility in order to do his job and, he quite frankly didn't see the point in a Section Commander being stationed in Utopia. After the battle with and subsequent defeat of the "Sky titan", Marcus finally accepts his promotion to Section Commander in the North. After the battle to reclaim Trost when Wall Rose was breached, Marcus returned to the district with his family and remained there until the defeat of the "Sky titan" when he returned to Utopia with Eric and Amber. In the present, Marcus and Eric and their subsequent squads along with Marcus' old friend Topper (Thomas Berkley) of the Military Police are the only people who know Mark's daughter, Amber, is not from within the walls and that she is this "Sky titan" that attempted to unify humanity by showing Marley a true global threat. The battle with this "Sky titan" was the first and only battle that truly shook Marcus.
He lost all but two members of his Special Ops Squad during the fight and, as his own daughter turned out to be said titan, he had to face the possibility of losing her in the process.
Amber nearly died in Mark's arms on the battlefield, leaving him utterly distraught as he'd been the one to deal the near fatal blow.He and Eric brought Amber home along with the bodies of his fallen squad members where they were cremated and eventually buried. To this day, Marcus is a little leery of titan shifters though he rarely if ever speaks of it.After Marcus's return to Utopia he was finally convinced to accept a promotion to Section Commander though he still insists people call him Captain Whitby as he doesn't like the title of Commander.--During the time in which Marcus was searching for information regarding this "Sky titan", he was approached and eventually detained in Marley by Nikolai Gervasi.During his detainment, Marcus was subjected to a series of gruesome tortures at Nikolai's hands that eventually lead to his breakdown and subsequent reveal of Erik Ackerman's knowledge of the "Sky titan" to Nikolai, an act that lead to the dissolution of his relationship with the Ackerman. At one point during his containment in Nikolai's clinic, Marcus had managed to escape and fled to try and find a way back to Paradis, only to find himself with former Marleyan solider Maes Dangerfield. As Maes himself held no real alliance to Marley, he helped Marcus hide until Nikolai stumbled upon them with a promise to return the Scout to Paradis. Maes agreed on the condition that he be the one who escorted Marcus to a ship, something Marcus was keen to see happen.Marcus still keeps in touch with Maes as he can.

The Marcus being portrayed on Twitter will be the present version. This biography may be updated as necessary.

Additional Information

Eric was born to a noble family that originally hailed from Orvud district. The family had been staying in the district while their estate was being built over the span of a thirteen years, however, upon it's completion, Eric would move out on his own to Karanes and forgo the family estate. He remained in Karanes until his was old enough to join the cadets wherein he enlisted simply to spite his own family.During his time in the cadets, Eric met his soon to be long term partner, Marcus Whitby. At first, Eric found Marcus incredibly irritating and, for lack of a better term, hated just about everything about him.Seeing Eric's displeasure with Marcus, the Commandant would often pair the two together for training exersizes, something that often led to a fight between the two.At one point during ODM gear training, Marcus and Eric wound up colliding in mid air, the accident leaving both of them scarred (Marcus on the left side of his face and Eric across the bridge of his nose). Not long after this incident, Eric and Marcus finally had a heart to heart in which Eric explained why he found Marcus so infuriating. He claimed that Marcus pushed him well out of his comfort zone and forced him to step outside his rigid boundaries which both infuriated and terrified him. This was also the time in which Marcus admitted his feelings for Eric, which Eric although hesitant, returned.Eric's behaviour towards Marcus shifted dramatically after this incident although he was still frequently put off by Marcus's antics.Shortly before graduation, Eric attempted to convince Marcus to join the Garrison with him only for Marcus to end up joining the Scouts regardless.Eric harboured a great deal of resentment towards Marcus for the choice but it simmered down after a year into their respective regiments. At some point in time, Eric moved up to Utopia after an incident along the wall in which one of his squad mates fell after the Scouts had left for an expedition.Eric himself had gone to try and rescue his comrade with a handful of other Garrison soldiers only to find themselves swarmed by titans until Marcus showed and gave them an opportunity to escape.Witnessing Marcus in action was what helped change Eric's mind about Mark's decision to join the Scouts in the first place, claiming that Mark's talent would have been wasted in the regiment. Many years after settling into his regiment (and his long distance relationship with Marcus), Eric had taken a week off to visit Marcus in Trost where he was met with Marcus's adopted daughter, Amber Dangidar. At first he considered the adoption reckless and nearly broke it off with him however, when Marcus informed him that he'd found Amber outside the walls, Eric reconsidered and decided he would help Marcus raise her.His reasoning was that the girl needed something a little more stable while Marcus was out beyond the walls.Despite his misgivings, Eric eventually agreed to Amber joining the cadets on the grounds that she give every regiment equal consideration and not just jump right into the Scouts because of Marcus.During Amber's final year of training in the cadets, Eric convinced Marcus to move up to Utopia with him by agreeing to marry him. He denies that was the only reason and likes to state it was simply so Amber could graduate with the peers she'd known the longest. After the battle to retake Trost, Eric reluctantly agreed to move to the district with Marcus and Amber and joined Hannes's squad up until the mans death. He temporarily took over Hannes's position until a more suitable Garrison soldier took his place.During the battle against the "Sky Titan", Eric and his squad from the North teamed up with Marcus and his special ops squad along with Mark's old friend Topper (Thomas Berkley) to bring it down.During the entire ordeal, Eric was often the voice of reason that helped Marcus make the hard choice to take the "Sky Titan" down, even though he knew it was their daughter Amber. After the "Sky Titan" was defeated, Eric accepted a promotion to Captain and made the call to move the family back up to Utopia to start fresh.
